Chinese knot(中国结 Zhōngguó jié) is a decorative handicraft art that began as a form of Chinese folk art in the Tang and Song dynasties in China. It was later popularized in the Ming Dynasty. The art is also referred to as Chinese traditional decorative knots.
Archaeological studies indicate that the art of tying knots dates back to prehistoric times. Recent discoveries include 100,000-year old bone needles used for sewing and bodkins, which were used to tie knots.
One major characteristic of decorative knot work is that all the knots are tied using one piece of thread, which is usually about one meter in length. However, finished knots look identical from both the front and back. As the Chinese consider red to be a lucky color, which symbolizes good fortune and prosperity, knots are often made using red thread.
These beautiful and intricate knots lend themselves to the festive mood when hung in the home during the Lunar New Year.
They also make popular gifts for friends and relatives. Today, they are an almost indispensable item in shopping malls during the Lunar New Year. A great many varieties of Chinese knots in different shapes and colors are now available in addition to more traditional designs. The most common being butterflies, flowers, birds, dragons, fish, and even shoes. Culturally they were expected to ward off evil spirits similar to Bagua mirrors or act as good-luck charms for Chinese marriages.
