Chinese Idiom | 名列前茅（mínglièqiánmáo）

　　The original meaning is marching in the front of the troops. The extended meaning is ranking among the best in exams or matches.原义是指走在前面的先头部队。后引申为考试或比赛等的名次列在前面。

　　How do we use it?

　　It is used to mean having excellent performance in certain aspects.

　　用于指在某方面的成绩十分优秀。

　　Example 1

　　Zhè jiā qǐyè de chǎnliàng fēisù zēngzhǎng, shìchǎng fèn'é yǐjīng mínglièqiánmáo.

　　这家企业的产量飞速增长，市场份额已经名列前茅。With the rapid growth in output, the enterprise has come out on top in market shares.

　　Example 2

　　Wǒ nǚ'ér qīmò kǎoshì kǎo de hěn hǎo, gè kē chéngjì dōu mínglièqiánmáo.

　　我女儿期末考试考得很好，各科成绩都名列前茅。My daughter did well in the final exams and came out on top in all subjects.

　　Example 3

　　A: Yòu yào kāi jiāzhǎnghuì le, zhēn tóuténg.

　　A：又要开家长会了，真头疼。

　　B: Zěnme le? Háizi yòu méi kǎo hǎo?

　　B: 怎么了?孩子又没考好?

　　A: Shìde. Nǐ jiā háizi duō hǎo a, měi cì kǎoshì dōu mínglièqiánmáo.

　　A: 是的。你家孩子多好啊，每次考试都名列前茅。

　　B: Měi ge háizi bù yíyàng, nǐmen háizi zài tǐyù fāngmiàn jiù bǐ wǒ érzi qiáng duō le.

　　B: 每个孩子不一样，你们孩子在体育方面就比我儿子强多了。

　　A：It is time for parents' meeting again. It is really a big headache to me.B：Why? Did your child do poorly again in the exam?A：Yes. Your child is so great and comes out on top in each exam.B：Children are different from each other. Your son is much better at PE than mine.
